    • The panel of Dialogue 1’s speakers share their experiences of building empathy through various tools such as research, observation, and practical application from programming to built environments.

Dr Angelina Lo from Creative Kids and Prof Michael Siu from PolyU engaged kids with opportunities to design country parks in Hong Kong, creating an innovative empathetic process across different age groups. Their sharing can shed light on different approaches needed to empower participants of different ages and the methodology behind.

The global speaker Claire Weisz will share about community-driven planning in New York with a lot of experience working cross-sector and hosting open dialogues with the community, and how those concepts can be applied to actual master planning and built projects.

  • 10:20 - 11:05
    • The panel of Dialogue 2 redefines how to situate POS in micro-context within our urban conditions as a place of intervention. From interstitial spaces to plazas to under-the-bridge public spaces, how might we address POS under dense urban conditions and create new possibilities.

Following the Design Thinking process, the speakers in the Dialogue 2 panel bring unique experiences of projects in a dense urban context. The three speakers form 3 very different perspectives while looking at the dense urban condition and creating new possibilities from it.

The research from Susanne Trumpf sets the tone of how interstitial and left-over public spaces can be considered for public space interventions, while James Shen approaches it from a practitioner standpoint: how do we look at micro-context within urban conditions as a place of intervention. Ruby Yeung yet offers another perspective of selecting, operating and creating new programming from an operator’s perspective at “under-the-bridge” spaces from her experience at VESSELS.

  • 11:15 - 12:00
    • The panel of Dialogue 3 discusses a variety of innovative ideas as pilots, setting a good example of using pilot schemes to experiment and co-create with the community. In particular, projects with more extensive scales and reach will be discussed with speakers across the public and private sectors.

For this panel, via Vincent Ng and Alice Yeung, we would like to bring forward how the government in Hong Kong such as Harbourfront Commission and ArchSD have tested a variety of innovative ideas as pilot, setting a good example of using pilot schemes to experiment with and co-creation with the community.

For Rasmus, the work at Gehl in Shanghai and across the world with government departments is also focused around being empathetic and listening to the public sector as patrons. Gehl has had a long-term partnership with the Shanghai Municipal Government on multiple projects, including a “People Oriented Waterfront”, and “Shanghai Streets Guideline”. They have been awarded the Magnolia Award by the Shanghai Municipal Government with their vision and collaboration. The experience of Gehl in Shanghai also extends to other global cities such as San Francisco and Copenhagen. The dialogue will explore how might we leverage our experience and challenges in Asia to other global cities.

    • The panel of Dialogue 4 will drive the discussion around projects across micro and macro scales that push innovation through constraints. Speakers across the public and private sectors will draw from their experiences across different scales and processes from writing guidelines, to macro planning frameworks, to procurement and equipment design, while pushing new ideas through constraints in each step.

Playright brings very interesting perspectives of creating inclusive parks and play spaces in Hong Kong across different scales, and exploring the issue of play. Playright is an avid change maker that also collaborates with different global partners in their exploration of bringing playful public spaces to Hong Kong. They would address micro-level innovation from play equipment procurement, to macro-level innovation of how to create better environments for play.

The global speaker Cathy Kiss brings years of experience as government planner on parks and play space in Melbourne, working across micro and macro-level to ensure park innovation are executed as planned.

Tracy Wong from the local Planning Department is also invited to discuss more planning ideas of how different parties across private and public sectors can contribute to public open spaces.

  • 14:30 - 15:30
    • This dialogue focuses on a discussion around how design thinking and placemaking helps innovation for public open space. From large-scale cross-country operations working with government agencies, do tank and social innovation consultancy to enable tri-sector collaborations, we bring perspectives from local and overseas speakers to address how to drive innovation based on their experiences.

We have two speakers, one from local, and one from overseas to discuss this topic.

Ada Wong has a vast range of projects through her work at GoodLab and MAD Social Lab. She founded these do tank and social innovation consultancy to enable tri-sector collaborations for positive changes in society.

UN-Habitat has adopted macro-scale using City Wide Assessment Tools and micro-scale method – Site Specific Assessment Tool. Sharing of Block by Block as a community participation tool in the design of urban public spaces, UN-Habitat’s experiences of implementing these projects all over the world would represent a good way of inclusive urban design processes.

We also have Eric Ho and Sarah Mui to walk through the current work of POSsible! Public Open Space Design Lab and what we are trying to achieve through the design thinking toolkit and design guide.
